Imperial War Museum Duxford, 7th March 2015

First aviation visit of the year was a 240 round trip to Duxford. There for the opening of the doors at 1000, a bee line to the far end of the field was made, taking in JP 5 XW289 and Cessna 421C on the field before the control tower: –

Harvard KF729 was started up and moved to the Motorway end of the field: –

And then into the restoration hangar, with highlights including the F-15A 76-020 being re-sprayed, Shackleton MR3 XF708 (not so much a highlight in bits, but impressive in such a tight space), and re-sprayed P-51D in ‘local’ markings: –

A quick look around the British Airliner collection in wonderful light: –

And then into the Battle of Britain Museum, and my highlight of course being Phantom FGR2 XV474: –

Next up, the Air and Sea hangar, with a good number of ‘flyers’ tucked up inside, as well as my personal favorite group of airframes, the Fleet Air Arm types: –

Into the live hangar, and some great stuff including a ‘new’ Sea Fury in construction, and a chance to get up close and personal with Sally B: –

Finally, into the Super hangar. It’s a shame the American Museum was closed this visit, but the thought of those aircraft maybe being brought outside is a tempting one: –

And so to the flying activity. We got very lucky and had a number of GA types during the afternoon, together with a Texan, and Spitfire Mk.IX SM520/G-ILDA: –

All in all a great day at the Museum, and here’s looking forward to another day out there in the not to distant future.
